theotherstraw

I am sure you have all seen the terrible stories and warnings about the dangers of disposable straws. Many companies have gotten away from using straws all together or switched to a more earth friendly alternative like paper straws. The photos of sea turtles with plastic straws stuck in their nose are absolutely devastating and we should be ashamed of ourselves for contributing to such an awful thing. In response to this harsh reality, many companies are making sustainable alternatives to disposable straws. theotherstraw is my favorite straw spearheading this movement!

theotherstraw makes these awesome bamboo straws! The straws are completely reusable as well as biodegradable and they come with a special brush to clean them between uses. The straws are thick enough to drink a smoothie through but also small enough to fit through the average hole in cups for regular soft drinks. You can either use the brush that comes with the set or pop them in the dishwasher. The straws are meant to last for 5-10 years which I find very impressive! When you are done with them, simply put them in with your compost. They will completely break down on their own!  I think that bamboo is such a cool resource and I love how many things are being manufactured with it these day. Bamboo is the fastest growing resource so bamboo products are very sustainable.

theotherstraw also makes bamboo cutlery that will help to cutdown on the disposable flatware industry. I keep my set in my car for when I dine out. I like being able to tell them to skip the silverware. I feel like while a small gesture, I am helping to cut down on the waste that ends up in landfills. To make these products last as long as possible, it is best to condition them with coconut oil every several uses. This will keep the product moisturized and help to avoid it becoming brittle. Head on over to theotherstraw website to checkout everything they have to offer! This company makes it so easy and affordable to do your part to cut down on waste and help to save our planet!
