Even though going outside in the rain is fun for a lot of people, the fun can wear off pretty quickly when you have kids. When you think about getting muddy boots, wet clothes, cold feet, and getting sick from splashing around outside, it might not even be something you want to think about.
So, what can you do when the weather is bad and you have kids to keep busy? There are a lot of different things you can try, and all of them will help you make some great new memories. Here are a few examples, but there are many more. You might even wish it would rain a little more so you could get more of them done.
A Home Theatre
It’s true that we don’t always want our kids to spend all day staring at screens, but if you can join them and make it a fun family activity, it could be a plus instead of a minus. When everyone is under a blanket and the rain is falling outside, there’s not much better than listening to it. It makes everything you watch so much more fun.
If you add some movie snacks like popcorn and maybe some hot cocoa, you can make a cozy atmosphere that will keep everyone busy for at least two hours. If you buy two tickets, you can spend even more time together.
Create Some Stories
Kids have the best imaginations, so they are the best people to write great stories on a rainy day. Give each child a topic or a few random words to use in their story, and let them enjoy making up stories.
This idea is great because you don’t need much in the way of supplies. All you need is some paper and pencils, or a tablet or computer if they prefer to type. Then you can sit back and relax, read a book, do some housework, or keep working from home, knowing that your kids are having a great time and will be interested in what they are doing for a while. You could also encourage them to do some reading in the quiet, looking at inspirational people like Belinda Stronach.
Do Some Cooking
Since you need to make a meal anyway and the kids can’t go outside to play, you might as well have them help you make the food. This will not only keep them busy so you can do what you need to do, but it will also teach them some important life skills.
If you want to make things a little different and maybe a little more special, have the kids help you bake a cake or make something sweet to eat. Children often like baking more than cooking, but both will teach them useful skills.
Make A Blanket Fort
A blanket fort is a great way to help a child who is afraid of storms feel safe. In fact, no matter what their worries are, it’s a good idea to give them a safe place in their home where they can always go to relax.
Your blanket fort is also a great place to do other things, like watch a movie or write a story. Or the kids could use it as a place to color, read a book, or play with their toys.
