ENT Basics: What is ENT?

ENT stands for “ear, nose and throat.” It refers to the medical specialty which focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of conditions that affect the ears, nose and throat. This includes infections, allergies, hearing loss and facial deformities. ENT specialists are trained to diagnose, treat and prevent these issues in both adults and children.

Common Childhood Ear Infections

Ear infections are incredibly common among children and can range from mild to severe. The most common form of ear infection is called otitis media, which occurs when fluid becomes trapped in the middle ear due to inflammation or a blockage in the Eustachian tube (a small canal connecting the ear to the back of the throat). Other ear infections can involve the outer and inner ears. Symptoms of ear infections include pain, difficulty hearing, fever, discharge from the ear, headache and dizziness.

Allergies & Sinus Problems

Allergens such as pollen, pet dander and dust mites are some of the most common triggers for allergies in kids. Children who suffer from allergies often experience symptoms such as sneezing, congestion, coughing and itchy eyes or skin. Additionally, sinus problems can arise due to inflammation of the mucous membranes that line your nose and sinuses. This can lead to a buildup of fluid which can cause facial pressure or pain, headaches and other discomfort.

How To Properly Clean Ears & Nose

It’s important to properly clean your child’s ears and nose to help prevent infections. When it comes to cleaning your child’s ears, use a cotton swab or washcloth with warm water. Make sure not to place the swab too far down into the ear canal as this can cause damage. For cleaning the nose, you can use saline sprays or drops which will help loosen mucus and keep the nasal passages moist.

ENT Surgeon or Pediatrician?

When it comes to choosing who should treat your child’s ENT issues, you can choose between an ENT surgeon and a pediatrician. An ENT surgeon is a doctor that specializes in ear, nose and throat conditions, while a pediatrician is trained to diagnose and treat general health problems in children. In most cases, if the condition is mild or uncomplicated then a visit to the pediatrician may be sufficient. For more complex conditions such as hearing loss or facial deformities, then it’s best to consult with an ENT specialist.

By following these tips, you can help your kids stay healthy and happy all year round. Knowing the basics about ENT, such as common ear infections and allergies, as well as how to properly clean your child’s ears and nose can help you take preventative measures to keep your little ones healthy. If symptoms become more severe or complex, then it’s best to consult with an ENT specialist or pediatrician.
