A Home For Sally is an absolutely precious picture book about dog adoption. Animals are such an important part of my life and I want my children to understand the importance of their companionship and proper care. This book does an excellent job of teaching children about pet adoption and proper care and understanding and I absolutely love it!
Sally is brought to the shelter as a young pup in hopes of finding her forever home. She is brought to the shelter with her siblings and she watches as they are all adopted but she is not. Sally is missing one of her front paws and because of this, she is frequently looked over by potential adopters. As time goes on and Sally remains unadopted, she starts to get sad and it starts to hurt her spirit. This book teaches such an important lesson about differences. Whether it is a dog or a person, differences are not a bad thing and should not be viewed that way. In the end, Sally’s patience pays off as she finds her forever home and they love her just the way that she is.
A few years ago, I adopted a dog that had been at the shelter for quite sometime himself. I could just see in his eyes that he was sad so I really related to Sally’s story. This dog that I adopted ended up being the best dog that I have ever had so I love that Sally is helping to push us and teach us to look at the dogs that might be getting passed by because often times, they are the best ones and will love you the most! While this story has a happy ending for Sally, it does leave you wondering what happens to her friends at the shelter which I think is a good note to leave this on for children. It is so important to teach them that we need to have respect for our pets and that they are a big commitment. I highly recommend A Home For Sally to all of the young readers in your life!
