When you’re a parent, it’s hard to find time for yourself. So much of your life is focused around your children that there’s very little left at the end of the day to take care of you. You spend all day taking kids to and from school, attending soccer games, dentist appointments, and birthday parties. You have to help them with homework and keep them entertained on rainy days. Until they get older and leave the house, they will be a constant presence in your life.

But it’s important that amidst all the challenges of parenting, you find some time to relax and enjoy some self-care. Parenting is a stressful job and it can take its toll on your mental health. If you don’t take a break now and then you risk burning out. You need some downtime in order to focus on yourself and do something that makes you happy, whether it’s exercising, meeting with friends, or just taking ten minutes to have a relaxing bath.

So how can you find more time to enjoy yourself when you have children to look after? Here are some tips for relaxing as a busy parent.

Adjust your sleep schedule

Children sleep a lot, so you can make the most of this quiet period to enjoy a spot of relaxation. If you wake up a little earlier, you can get in a morning run or sit and read your favorite book with a cup of tea. When your little one wakes up you will feel a little more rested and prepared to take on the challenges of parenthood.

Get help

Having a support network around you is crucial for any parent. If you have close friends or relatives, chances are they will be more than happy to help you out with the childcare from time to time. Whenever you feel you need a break, ask one of your loved ones to give you a hand. There’s no shame in asking for help, and it will give you the space you need to look after your mental health.

Use time-saving hacks

Your parenting responsibilities can take up all your time, but perhaps there’s a way you can be more efficient? Find time-saving hacks to get your chores done a lot faster, then you’ll have a lot more leisure to do the things you want to do. For example, rather than cooking dinner every night of the week, make a big batch at the start of the week and you’ll only need to heat up the leftovers for the next few days.

Put down your phone

Pretty much everybody in the modern age is addicted to their phones, but they are one of the biggest time wasters in existence. How long do you spend scrolling social media or playing silly games each day? Not only is it pointless but it can also impact your mental and physical health. If you can make an effort to cut down your screen time, you will find much more time in your day to be productive.
